SEMITI 298

Universal Sulfate Rutile

Cost-optimized sulfate-process rutile — 25% cheaper than chloride for non-critical applications.

International equivalents: LB R-298

SEMITI 298 is a universal-grade sulfate-process rutile titanium dioxide, the cost-optimized alternative to chloride-process grades like SEMITI 996 and 902. It is the direct counterpart to LB Group R-298, currently the highest-volume sulfate-process grade in China.

Sulfate-process TiO2 differs from chloride in a few measurable ways. The particle size distribution is slightly broader; metallic impurity content is slightly higher; the b* color value is slightly higher (slight yellow undertone vs chloride's brighter neutral white). These differences are typically not visible in matte and flat paints, in plastics where color is secondary to performance, or in inks where the substrate dominates appearance.

The economics are compelling. SEMITI 298 typically costs 25–30% less per kg than the equivalent chloride grade. For paint manufacturers running economy and value-tier lines, plastic compounders running interior PVC or PE, and ink makers running newsprint and packaging inks, SEMITI 298 offers significant cost reduction with minimal performance compromise.

Why customers pick SEMITI 298

  • 0125–30% lower cost than chloride equivalents
  • 02Acceptable for matte/flat paints, interior plastics, packaging inks
  • 03REACH-registered, food contact compliant per FDA 21 CFR 178.3297
  • 04Direct LB R-298 equivalent — same supplier family

Self — SEMITI 902 (chloride)

SEMITI 902 has brighter undertone (lower b*), narrower PSD, slightly higher tinting strength. SEMITI 298 wins on cost (25%+ cheaper); 902 wins on premium appearance. Choose by paint tier.

Packaging & shipping

25 kg paper bag with PE liner; 500 / 1000 / 1250 kg FIBC. Standard pallet 1 t. 20' container 18–20 t. No special handling required for ocean transport.

Common questions

Is SEMITI 298 acceptable for exterior paint?+
Not for premium exterior. Sulfate rutile has measurably worse chalking resistance than chloride. For exterior service > 3 years, switch to SEMITI 826D or 706.
Will my paint look more yellow with SEMITI 298 vs SEMITI 902?+
In matte and flat finishes, the difference is typically not visible (Δb* ~ 0.3 between sulfate and chloride). In semi-gloss and gloss, the chloride brightness advantage is more visible. Test in your specific finish.
